Artistry In Wood and Steel is the handcrafted work of Phoenix, Arizona-based craftsman Matt Goebel. Creating custom art and furniture from wood, metal, and other unique materials, Matt combines traditional craftsmanship with creative design to produce timeless, one-of-a-kind pieces. Each creation is thoughtfully crafted to bring beauty, character, and lasting function to homes and spaces.
The Story
Woodworking has been a lifelong passion of mine, allowing me to create meaningful pieces for my home, family, friends, and community fundraisers—especially those supporting my children’s schools.
For more than 35 years, I worked in home building and remodeling, developing a deep appreciation for craftsmanship, design, and the beauty of quality materials. As I transitioned into retirement, I chose to shift my focus from construction to creative woodworking, dedicating more time to my art and the process of creating unique, handcrafted pieces.
While I have enjoyed woodworking for decades, it has only been in recent years that I began sharing my work beyond my personal circle and offering pieces for others to enjoy. Each creation reflects my love of craftsmanship, attention to detail, and the satisfaction of bringing something beautiful and lasting into someone’s home.
The Art of Woodturning
Each piece I create is approached individually, allowing the natural character and beauty of the materials to guide the design process. Rather than following a production approach, I take the time to uncover the unique qualities within each piece, adapting the design as the wood reveals its own story.
Materials and Quality
I believe in honoring the story and character of each material I use. Whenever possible, I source wood from trees that have naturally fallen rather than those harvested for production. I also incorporate repurposed steel alongside new materials, creating pieces that combine sustainability and craftsmanship into timeless works of art.
Custom Work
I welcome the opportunity to create custom pieces that incorporate meaningful materials, including sentimental wood or other personal items that hold special memories. Each project is thoughtfully crafted to preserve the story and character of those materials while transforming them into a unique, timeless piece of art or furniture.
